Darrell Dean, born in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1958, grew up immersed in the Appalachian cultural landscape and crafted op art-style bottles with his grandmother until changes in tourism altered their world. After moving to Washington, DC, he studied fine art at George Washington University and experienced the vibrant art scenes of the '80s while also working as an antique dealer. Now based in Winston-Salem, NC, Dean blends cubism, dada, punk, and pop influences into his unique style, creating bold, introspective portraits that reflect his personal and artistic journey.
